People ask all the time why I want to live in such a small town. I mean really one would think there is nothing here. Nestled in the mountains of Tennessee along the Cumberland river in between Nashville and Clarksville not only will you find beauty, but some hidden treasures of pure delight for your taste buds. I had lived in Ashland City 2 years before I hopped into Cody's Diner one morning blurry eyed and hungry with my daughter-in-law and grandson. My first take was it was crowded. We had to park across the street crowded.
The second take I had was it was eclectic and charming. Worthy of a mom and pop title and it REALLY smelled good. Dishes were clattering and people were visiting, forks clanked on plates, and we were greeted with a friendly "hey, welcome ya'll sit wherever you like". Then I noticed the chalk board Blackberry Cobbler, Chess and Peanut butter pie ooooo there was more, but they had me at cobbler. The atmosphere was like being at Grandma's at the holidays. It seemed everyone knew everyone.

We grabbed our menus and set out on decision making. Which turned into if you get the bacon cheese burger and fries. I will get the meat and 3 so we can share. I mean who dies not want to try everything when it smells so good, looks so good, and everyone around you is satisfyingly happy. Our food came out pretty quickly. The first take. I was definitely having leftovers. The portions were huge. The burger was so big and topped so well it just did not fit into our mouths even after a BIG squish. I had the fried okra, mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread muffin, and a hamburger steak. The potatoes very apparently were real to my delight. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The tiny man in our lives delighted in licks of gravy and potatoes. We were beyond stuffed and that cobbler had to be ordered to go and came complete with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Cody's is now where I meet my besty for breakfast, and trail end for a grab and go burger when I just cannot stand fast food. It is where I grab a good home cooked country meal with all the fixins. This is definitely a spot to stay and sit and talk over an amazingly cooked meal. Cody;s is becoming a tradition for me and one I want to make regular with my grandson. It defintiley is one of our hidden treasures and made me exclaim after the first visit to my love "WHY HAVEN'T WE EATEN HERE BEFORE?". Which turned into my journey to find more hidden treasures in this small town.
Next time your in or through Ashland City, Tn make sure and stop in and tell the folks at Cody's a good hello. I promise you will not leave hungry or disappointed. So, now when people ask why I live in such a small town. I simply reply we may be small on buildings, crime, traffic, red lights, pollution, activities that are indoors, but we are BIG where it counts. In the heart, flavor, down home, neighborly, and family kind of way.
